Womens Golf Clubs 101

Annika, Paula, Michelle and Kari are names of famous female golfers that have helped increase the popularity of womens golf.   It is now cool to play golf and more and more young girls are learning to play the game.  The opportunities for young women today to earn college scholarships to play golf are plentiful  and women in business are finding that golf can be a powerful business tool.  As a result, we are seeing an increase in the options available in women's golf equipment.

What makes a women's golf club different?  Why not just use a golf club designed for the average male golfer?   Besides cosmetics there are technical differences between the two.  Club heads designed for female golfers have a higher degree of loft to help increase ball flight.  This is true for irons, drivers, fairway woods and hybrids.  Women's club heads have more offset between the hosel and clubface, which helps to square the face of the club at impact resulting in straighter shots.  Club heads are slightly oversized which increases the size of the sweet spot and makes the golf club more forgiving.  The sole of the club will be wider and that helps eliminate fat shots or digging the club into the ground at impact.  Women's club head weights are also a little lighter which helps create a faster swing speed and thus adds distance to the length of shots.  Graphite is the most common shaft material used in ladie's clubs because it is lighter which again creates a higher swing speed that translates into more distance.  Shaft flex is also different.  The correct shaft flex is determined by swing speed and so the shafts are usually more flexible; this helps get the ball airborne easier.  Shaft lengths also differ and ladies standard club lengths are one inch shorter than a standard men's club length.  Shaft length is determined by height and the ability to hit the ball square on the clubface so this is one area that can change and is best determined by an experienced club fitter.  The golf grip is slimmer for women to accommodate smaller hands.

All of these things make playing golf easier for the beginner to average female golfer.  Having said all of this, accomplished female golfers will find they may not need these enhancements to the club and will play a standard golf club that a male would play.  In this case the only difference might be in the flex and material of the shaft, which is determined by the golfer's swing speed.

Whatever caliber of golfer you are, Birdieman Custom Clubs is sure to have the golf club that is right for you and your game.
