Golf Club Selection

Golf Club SelectionTips for selecting the right golf club…

Begin by looking at what’s going to best fit your playing needs. No longer is a traditional set ( 3-PW ) of irons the norm. With the increasing popularity of the hybrid the modern set make up has changed. Replacing those hard to hit 3 and 4 irons with much easier to hit hybrids has become very popular.

Here are some things to consider when buying:

Custom Made Irons

Irons are primarily made by either investment casting or forging. For the average golfer cast irons are better because they have a larger sweet spot on the clubface. Most cast irons will be “ cavity back” heads, which means weight, has been taken from the back center of the head forming a cavity and moved to the perimeter (called perimeter weighting). This makes the club more forgiving on off center hits. These types of irons are often referred to as “ game improvement irons “ Game improvement irons will also have more offset which makes it easier to square the clubface at impact. Forged irons or blades as they are often called are generally for lower handicap or more accomplished players, as they are less forgiving. Also consider the aesthetics of the club. It is important that you like the look of the club.

Custom Made Drivers

Driver heads come in various sizes although it is becoming most common to find heads in the 460cc size, which is the largest head size, allowed by the USGA. Titanium is the most common material used because it is very light and strong. Drivers with a low center of gravity will be easier to get the ball in the air. Clubs that have the weight moved out to the sides and back will have a higher MOI  (moment of inertia). MOI is the measurement of the clubs ability to resist twisting on off center hits making the club more forgiving. Square heads are becoming very popular because of their high MOI.

Custom Made Fairway Woods

Most fairway woods are made of steel. Club heads with a low center of gravity will get the ball in the air easier. Club heads with more offset will help to get the clubface square at impact.

Custom Made Hybrids

Hybrids are a blend of irons and metal wood. Most hybrids are made of steel. They have become very popular because they are much easier to hit than long irons. Hybrids come in a variety of lofts making it possible to replace almost every iron in your bag.

Shafts – The engine of the golf club

Steel vs. Graphite

Steel shafts are heavier than most graphite shafts so you sacrifice some distance but gain accuracy. Steel shafts do not experience torque (twisting of the shaft due to miss-hit shots). Steel shafts are less expensive than most graphite shafts. Steel is a good choice if you have a very quick swing motion.

Graphite shafts are lighter than steel shafts so you will gain distance but lose a little accuracy. Graphite shafts will experience torque (twisting of the shaft due to miss-hit shots). Graphite shafts are more common in drivers and fairway woods than steel. Slower swing speeds would benefit from using graphite shafts. Graphite shafts are quite a bit more expensive than most steel shafts.

Shaft Flex

What shaft flex to choose is determined by your swing speed. Use the Quick Fit feature or the Club Fitting feature found on the home page. If you need further assistance use the Contact Us feature found on the home page and I will help pick which flex is best for you.
